Parts #9 - Contains rib #11 & #13, two cylinders and truss sections. Prepare and number ribs #11 and #13 as before. Carefully cut three truss lengths: 17mm, 12mm and 16mm. Retrieve the stored tube, carefully cut six lengths: 11mm, 13mm, 14mm and two 16mm & 18mm Cut and shape the ends of each tube as before, then glue the corresponding tubes onto rib #13 at the marked points. Add the trusses, ensuring that the slot of each truss faces to the right as per those of rib #12. Glue the tubes to rib #11 Temporarily fit rib #11 & #13 into the wingframe. Prepare the two cylinders as before, then add them to the manifold. That's it for this stage, carefully store the assembly and parts. Parts #10 - Contains rib #14 & rib #15, two cylinders and a 20mm machine-gun casting. Prepare rib #14 & #15 as before. Cut truss lengths of 10mm, 11mm, 14mm, 15mm and two 16mm lengths. Locate the truss mount points upon rib #14 & #15 and add the relevant truss sections as shown, ensuring that the slot of each truss faces towards the right. Then temporarily locate both ribs into their corresponding slots in wingframe. Remove any burrs from the gun casting. For added detail, carefully drill the muzzle end of the gun barrel using a 1mm bit, no more than 3mm deep and ensuring that the bit is parallel to the barrel. Assemble the two cylinders as before, then prime and paint them black along with the gun. Add the two cylinders to the manifold. That's it for this stage, carefully store the assembly and parts. Cut and prepare nine lengths of tube as follows: 8mm, two 9mm, 12mm, three 13mm and two 16mm Cut three lengths of truss: 9mm,13mm and 14mm long. Add the relevant tube and truss lengths to rib #14, #15 and #16, the place the ribs into the corresponding slots within the wingframe. Assemble the cylinder as before and prime/paint it black, then glue the cylinder onto the manifold. The machine-gun body can be painted black at the next stage after a further part is added to it. That's it for this stage, carefully store the assemblies and remaining parts. Cut and prepare six lengths of tube: 7mm, 8mm, two 11mm and two 12mm long Add the relevant tube and truss lengths to ribs #17 and #18, then place the ribs into the corresponding slots within the wingframe. Check the crankcase, machine-gun body, magazine and its cover for burrs. Take the machine gun casting from stage 11, and glue the machine-gun body onto it, then glue the magazine cover onto the magazine. Prime and paint the machine-gun body assembly black, and paint the crankcase casting light grey to match the previous crankcase castings. Test-fit the crankcase casting onto the engine assembly, then glue into place. That's it for this stage, carefully store the assembly and parts. Parts #13 - Contains rib #19 & #20, machine-gun bar, tube and spark plugs. Prepare and label ribs #19 & #20 as before. Cut lengths of truss: 6mm, 7mm, 13mm long, and three 12mm lengths. Cut and prepare six lengths of tube: 5mm, 6mm, 9mm, 11mm long, and two 10mm lengths. Add the relevant tube and truss lengths to ribs #19 and #20, then place the ribs into the corresponding slots within the wingframe. Using a 0.7mm bit, drill a 0.5m deep hole into the recess of each of the spark plug castings. Then cut away the sprue at the plug tops, and then carefully remove the burr from the top of each of the spark plugs. To avoid loss, only cut the spark plugs from the sprue when you are ready to install them, and when cutting them from the sprue, ensure that you do not cut-off the mount spigot at the base of each plug. Retrieve the engine and locate the spark plug socket in each of the cylinders as shown in steps 19 and 21, which is centrally located between inlet/outlet manifold of each cylinder. Then drill 1mm holes, 1.5m deep into each socket. Glue the spark plugs into place on the lower bank of cylinders, making sure they are correctly oriented as shown in steps 22, 23, 24 & 25. Note that the orientation of the spark plugs differs on each side of the lower bank of cylinders as shown in steps 24/25. Basically, two spark plugs are located into each cylinder of the lower bank (one plug front, one plug back) as shown in step 25, (further plugs will be provided later on for the upper bank of cylinders). Remove any burrs from the machine-gun bar and paint it black. Retrieve the 20mm machine gun parts, glue the machine-gun bar onto the gun assembly, then add the barrel and magazine, ensuring that the side of the magazine with the cover faces away from the barrel. That's it for this stage, carefully store the assembled items and remaining tube. Future parts sets: Parts #14 - Contains rib #21 & #22, trusses, rods and assorted rocker boxes. Parts #14 - Contains rib #21 & #22, trusses, rods and assorted rocker boxes. Prepare and label ribs #21 & #22 as before. Cut lengths of truss: 5mm, 7mm, 10mm, 12mm long, and two 11mm lengths. Cut and prepare lengths of tube: 4.5mm, 5mm, 9mm, 10mm long, and two 8mm lengths. Add the relevant tube and truss lengths to ribs #21 and #22, then place the ribs into the corresponding slots within the wingframe. Identify the rocker castings, each is slightly differently shaped and can be identified by a small letter - f,g (x2) and h. Carefully remove the castings from the spue's and smooth any burrs. Using a 0.7mm drill bit, drill a hole 2mm deep into the small depression in each of the castings as shown in the step photo. Then using a 1mm bit, drill a 1.5mm deep hole into the larger depression of each casting -Be very careful not to drill right through the casting! Cut the metal rod into two 19mm lengths and two 20mm lengths, and shape each end of the rod as in the photo. Then prime/paint the rods and rocker box castings black. Glue in place the 19mm and 20mm rods in an anticlockwise direction as shown in the steps, then add the relevant rocker box to each of the four highlighted cylinders, ensuring that the end of each rod is seated into the underside drilled hole of the rocker box That's it for this stage, carefully store the engine, wingframe and remaining parts. Parts #15 - Contains rib #23 & #24, connecting rod case, tube and assorted rocker boxes. Prepare and label ribs #23 & #24 as before. Cut lengths of truss: 3mm, 5mm, 9.5mm & 11mm, and two 10mm lengths. Cut and prepare lengths of tube: 3mm, 4mm, 6.5mm & 8mm, and two 7mm lengths. Add the relevant tube and truss lengths to ribs #23 and #24, then place them into the corresponding slots within the wingframe. Identify the 'g' and 'h' rocker castings, then carefully remove the castings from the sprues and smooth any burrs. As before, use a 0.7mm bit to drill a hole 2mm deep into the small depression in each of the castings, then use a 1mm bit to drill a 1.5mm deep hole into the larger depression of each rocker casting. Cut the metal rod into two 19mm lengths and two 20mm lengths, and shape both ends of each rod as before, then prime/paint the rods and rocker box castings black. Take the connecting rod case cover and check it for burrs. Use a 1mm bit to drill 1.5mm deep holes into each of the depressions around the perimeter edge, then prime and paint it grey to match the previous rod cases. Continue placing the rods onto the engine in an anticlockwise direction, starting with a 19mm length followed by a 20mm length, then repeat. Then add a 'g' rocker casting to the first 19mm rod and an 'f' rocker casting to the 20mm rod, and repeat the process with the remaining two rods, ensuring that the end of each rod is seated into the drilled hole on the underside of each rocker box. Test-fit the connecting rod cover onto the engine assembly, then glue it into place. That's it for this stage, carefully store the engine, wingframe and remaining tube length. Parts #16 - Contains the engine ring, left & right exhausts, and rocker boxes. Identify and prepare the 'e' and 'h' rocker castings and prepare three 19mm and three 20mm rods as before, and paint them black. Continue adding the 19mm & 20mm rods alternately onto the engine in an anticlockwise direction, ensuring that the end of each rod is seated into the underside hole of each rocker box. Take the engine ring, remove any burrs, then spray it with clear metal primer and clear coat in your chosen finish, or you can leave it bare metal. Take the exhaust pipe and engine ring, remove any burrs moulding lines, and detail the exhaust opening as shown in the steps. The steps show the exhaust painted black, I chose to paint it 'burnt metal' finish and painted the exhaust outlet matt black. Add the ring to the engine, ensuring that it is correctly oriented and that arms of the rocker boxes are seated into the hole mount points on the rear of the ring. Add the exhaust pipes to the engine starting with the right-hand exhaust, ensure that the exhaust tubes are correctly seated into the cylinders, then add the left-hand exhaust. That's it for this stage, carefully store the engine.
