Hi all,

qustion for you electronic buffs, I brought a model marble maze you you know one when the marble run around down and then back up and around again.

Anyway it comes with a small motor and gearbox, which is run from two 1.5 batteries and a switch, I was thinking about seeing if I could run it via solor power.

So I brought a 3v panel and nothing happened, so I brought a 6v panel and again no go, I've read some bits a they go on about amps needing to be a set number and that having a motor directly connected to a panel all the time can burn it out when there isnt enought sunlight to turn it, and that a photosentcive swith is recommened to allow the panel only to send power when its at the correct volt/amps

To me this is Cursing Cursing Cursing any help.

Hi Mustang,BigGrin

I don`t know a lot about solar power, except that I have a small 12v panel on my Cruiser that just keeps the Leisure battery slowly trickle charged whilst the boat is not being used. The power system for the boat switches from charging the start-up battery after the engines running to the Leisure battery to keep internal 12v systems working, like lighting etc.

I`ve never known of a model being run by solar power, but that does not mean it can`t be. There are garden lights etc that run on small panels, but they will be very low power items.

Another possibility could be to wire in a 240v mains plug-in transformer that does put out the required volts/amps. There are loads on the market, but you will need to choose carefully which one you use.

Sorry I can`t be of more help and hope you find a solution.

Hi Mustang

Solar panels are used for trickle charging a battery, not necessarily running a project. The amount of solar panels you would need would be a lot of them and then you would still be reliant on daylight and sunshine.
All solar powered lights you buy have a rechargeable battery in them. They trickle charge the battery during the day and defending on how much light there has been during the day depends how long they work for during the night period. The best option would be to have it battery run with solar panels hooked up to keep the batteries charged. You can the run it any time of the day.
Hope that helps
Mark

Hi Mustang!
The only thing I can think of which comes close is a revolving display turntable which I bought many years ago from the now sadly gone Maplin stores. It's still running years later (or would be if it hadn't been taken out of the porch during the re-build with new double glazed windows!) I never looked inside it to see what was in there, but the small, six inch square? solar panel would turn quite heavy plants slowly around with no effort when the sun was out.
If I remember rightly I think there are solar powered turntables still to be seen on ebay, you might find something to fit the bill on there!
Good luck!

Why not just convert it to plug into the wall? You can wire in a remote control for it too if you want, to turn it on and off.

Thanks for the reply’s all, but my idea was to try and run it on solar power.

I’ve seen some small solar powered cars that just run via a panel connected straight to a small motor, so I don’t understand why it doesn’t work.

Hi again Mustang!
Have a look at "Solar powered wind spinner tool" on ebay - its designed to slowly turn a wind chime etc up to 1kg in weight, you might be able to link it up to a gearbox or something to do the marble thing!
