Issue 51 - Contains brake calipers & caliper diffusers., and has instructions for attaching the rear caliper diffusers, attaching the front and rear calipers.

Attaching the rear caliper diffusers - Gather the engine/gearbox unit and brake disc hub assemblies.

Note that the caliper diffusers are handed so take care not to mix them up.
Test-fit the left brake caliper diffuser to the left rear brake rotor holder, to identify the contact area, then apply a little ABS glue to the slot, then quickly fit the brake disc onto the shaft, ensuring you don't get any glue on it and then apply glue to the tab of the diffuser and press into place.

Ensure that the free end of the diffuser is parallel to the face of the disc, so the distances indicated in the step are the same. Then secure the diffuser with a strip of masking tape and repeat for the opposite diffuser.

Attaching the front calipers - Take the front brake units assembled in issue 12. The brake caliper parts are marked L and R for identification.
Separate the front left caliper from the sprue, taking care not to damage the plating and remove any burrs.
Test-fit the caliper to the left front brake unit to identify the contact points. Scrape the plating off al three contact points identified earlier, then apply a little ABS glue to al of them, and press the caliper into place, making sure the tabs are seated against the inner wall of the slot. Secure the caliper joint with a piece of masking tape.
Repeat the process for the right caliper.

Attaching the rear calipers - Remove the left rear caliper from the sprue and test-fit it to the brake unit in the same way as the front ones, making sure that you have removed all moulding flash from the point arrowed in the steps.
Scrape the plating off the contact points and apply a little ABS glue to all three points, then press the caliper into position, making sure the tabs are seated against the inner wall of the groove.

Secure the joints with masking tape, then repeat the process for the right rear caliper.

That's it for this week, carefully store the assemblies.

Future issues:

Issue 53 - Contains a rear tyre, silicone oil & a protective bag., and has instructions for treating and storing the tyres.

Treating the tyres - Start by removing all four tyres from their wheel rims, then tear a couple of sheets of toilet tissue (or kitchen roll) to go with each tyre.

Cut the corner of the blue sachet of silicone oil, being careful not to squeeze it. Run a little of the oil around the side wall of the tyre and use your finger to spread the oil all over both the sidewalls (including the bead) and the tread, repeat for all four tyres.

Thoroughly wash your hands clean of the oil and seal the sachet with masking tape for future use.

Wrap all four tyres in the tissue and place them into the blue protective bag, seal the end and leave the bag in a cool dark place for 3 days.
Then remove the tissue paper and wipe any surplus oil from each tyre. All four tyres should now have a similar soft sheen, store the tyres in the blue protective bag, and seal with masking tape until it is time to refit the tyres onto the wheels.

Note - Ensure that you do not touch any of the car assembly, parts or the wheel rims if you hands/fingers have traces of the oil upon them, where any residue left may later hinder glue/decal adhesion.

You can if you so choose, leave the tyre treating until it is time to fit the tyres to the wheels.

That's it for this week.

Future issues:

Issue 54 - Contains the steering wheel, control paddles, display panel, steering rods & screws., and has instructions for Stage 1 the steering assembly - assembling the steering wheel and attaching the steering rods.

Issue 55 - Contains the steering cranks, boss, gears, end stops & guide crank., and has instructions for Stage 2 of the steering assembly - attaching the steering boss.

Issue 56 - Contains the steering column, guides, crank support & screws., and has instructions for Stage 3 of the steering assembly - preparing the steering column, mounting the pedals, building the cockpit front, assembling the steering gear unit and fitting the steering column.

Issue 54 - Contains the steering wheel, control paddles, display panel, steering rods & screws., and has instructions for Stage 1 the steering assembly - Assembling the steering wheel and attaching the steering rods.

Assembling the steering wheel - Test-fit the control paddles onto the back of the steering wheel, noting the correct orientation of the paddles and the contact area upon the steering wheel. Apply a little ABS glue and press the paddles into place.

Attaching the steering rods - Retrieve the two front brake/suspension units you assembled in issue 51

Take the left-hand assembly and one of the two steering rods. Align the eye on the end of the rod with the small hole indicated in the step. Make sure that the opposite end of the rod is pointing rearwards as highlighted by the yellow arrow in the step photo.
Insert a type 'D' screw through the eye and into the hole. Do not overtighten the screw, the rod should be free to pivot.
Turn the unit over and lay the rod into the slot as shown, and secure with masking tape.

Repeat the process for the right-hand brake/suspension unit.

That's it for this week, carefully store the steering wheel, brake/suspension units and the display panel.

Attaching the steering boss - Take the steering wheel assembly that you put together in issue 54.

Take the steering boss and match up the horseshoe-shaped projection with the matching socket in the back of the steering wheel.
Apply a little ABS glue to the socket and to the circular area of the boss, fit the boss into the socket and hold in place for a few minutes until the glue has bonded.
