I was thinking of making my own out of glass. If I can find a glass shop that is willing to cut the glass accurately, it's just a case of sorting a suitable glue and a nice wooden plinth. I'm sure I can make one with plenty of change from the £85 for the one on ebay.

It's prob going to cost easy £50 - 60 and will be using 12mm and 6mm mdf. I am going to sandwich 10 led's in the top and 10 in the base. I have bought 13mm and 20mm ali square u shape tube for the base and the top. The mdf will be covered in some very nice carbon effect sheet and the back glass will be black window film with the Mclaren logo within. I have all the bits apart from the mdf and glass, so once I get the board this weekend i will make a start. Don't like the one's on ebay especially the lead cover ups on the joints.

Let us know how this progresses. How will you join the glass, will you glue it ? I was looking at some aluminium angle in B&Q to cover the edges.

Going to clear silicone ( high modulus ) as per my tropical tank. Less obtrusive than angle or lead. Only going to use ali on the base and top.

My se7en car I built has a 5mm acrylic shorty screen and I thought.....why not ! So have now ( thanks to you ) ordered some 4mm acrylic already cut £ 30 only need 4 sides as the top and bottom are solid. Have nearly made the top and bottom, will be finished end weekend. In the end I have used 20mm ext 17mm int ali channel encapsulaing 3 layers, 6mm and 6mm MDF and 3mm harboard spacer which all locks into the u channel. The led's are sandwiched within. Pic is channel holding layers together while setting

I don't know how I missed this thread before but that looks brilliant! I was thinking of maybe designing a display case as if the car was 'in the garage' at McLaren, but this has got me thinking as it looks brilliant! May come begging for advice when I get round to making the case mate! Keep us updated! Building the McLaren MP4-23

Pic is channel holding layers together while setting the 4mm acrylic cut, how did u attach them ? did you have them smoothed finished because from wht i have been told the plastic when bonding with the solvent shatters it. im interested in knowing how u did it without that happening? out of interest what are the internal dimenions of ur display case? . for the base i was thinking of using contiboard or pvc that ppl use for window boards and using edging strips to finish it off, id use internal pvc strips which id drill holes for my leds and use rgb strips and controller which u can get cheaply operated by remote.

Going to use acryic bonding cement....it's all on youtube 'how to'
Haven't got the acrylic yet hopefully get delivered early next week.
Size overall will be 700mm x 300mm x 300mm.... acrylic size will be approx 20mm less in all measurements....thereabouts, did't want it looking squashed so kept the height up. Will post pics of it finished probably end next week.
