Stage 17 - Contains gun port blanking squares, bow side panel and hardwood strips. Complete the edge lining of the deck overhang then smooth the surface level with the decking. Then the deck surfaces with fine sandpaper. Take the bow side panel and add a gun port blanking square to its inside surface at the first porthole of the forward/bow end, it needs to be set 5mm up from the bottom edge and not encroach into the frame slot. Test-fit the panel onto the hull framework to identify the contact points and check the fit, then smooth the inside facing surface of the panel and stain with your chosen shade. For a good wood-to-wood glue bond, you should either not stain or carefully sand the stain from the glue contact areas. Glue and pin the panel into place as shown. Later this panel will be skinned with a dark wood veneer, therefore once the glue has dried you can chose to remove the pins if you wish, otherwise you will have to sand the pin heads flush with the panel to avoid veneer lumps and bumps, or you could snip the heads from the nails and then drive the shank flush. Store the remaining hardwood strip and gun port blanking squares. Stage 18 - Contains the transom and a bow side wall panel. Add a porthole blanking squares to the inside surface of the bow side panel as per the opposite panel, then stain the inside surface of the panel to match that of the opposite panel. Cut a piece of scrap planking to level the remaining section on top of frame #1 with the decking, and glue into place. Smooth any overhang and level the strip with the decking. Glue and pin the side wall panel into place as per the opposite side panel. Check that the front edges of both bow panels are level with the edge of frame #1, and smooth accordingly. That's it for this stage, carefully store the transom piece. Stage 19 - Contains the stern side wall panel and two cannon & carriages. Start by fairing the stern frames and deck edges as shown in the step photo, using the stern panel as a guide. Add the six gun port blanking squares as shown to the inside surface of the panel. ensure that they are set as per the measurements indicated. Then test-fit the panel and make any final amusement. Stain the inside surface to match the previous panel. Then glue and pin into place as before and set aside to fully dry (for improved bonding, locate the glue contact points and carefully scrape the stain from these points). Cannon - Other than advice to paint the cascabel of the gun barrels red, there is no info to paint the gun carriage, which you can obviously choose to do if you prefer create a wood look. My build will follow the intended build and therefore the cannon will be left as supplied and the cascabel painted. Glue the gun barrels onto the gun carriages as shown, then paint the cascabel red. Carefully store the cannon. Stage 20 - Contains the stern side wall panel, gun port blanking squares and a cannon set. This stage is an opposite side repeat of stage 19. Fair the hull at the points indicated, then trial fit the panel. Glue 6 gun port blanking squares to the inside surface of the panel as shown and note the positioning. Stain the inside of the panel to match that of the previous panels. Glue and pin the panel into place, and when the glue has fully set, drive home, snip off the heads or remove the pins. Assemble and finish the cannon as before. Stage 21 - Contains planks, grating strips and a hardwood strip. Fairing the hull - Before fairing the hull I added protection to the bow and stern tops to prevent breakage during the fairing process. Starting from the bow and below the lower deck, fair the edges of the frames as shown in the steps, by filing them until they form a smooth flowing continuous curve, which can be checked by placing a plank across the frames. Be careful not to remove the small grooves halfway up the curve of the frames, which will serve as a guide for the start of the planking. Test-fit one of the planks in the small grooves in the frames to check that the curve and that the plank fits inside the grooves. Now file the frames above the lower deck. Again start fairing from the bow, trying to create a continuous curve and aligning the frames with the side walls. Continue the fairing process along the hull. Sand the frames so that they are all in line and be sure not to remove the groove in the side of each of the frames. File the stern below the lower deck into a curve, as with the bow. Then file the frames above the lower deck, until the frames are in line with the side wall panel. Grating - Assemble the grating strips by interlocking the slots as shown. Then apply diluted PVA adhesive into the joints then set the frame aside to fully dry. Ensure that the grating is set squarely. That's it for this stage, carefully store the grating, planks and hardwood strip. Stage 22 - Contains bulwark panels and gun port blanking squares. Carefully store the bulwark panels and gun port blanking squares until the next stage. I will be following the instructions for planking of the hull. The first plank row is fitted into the slots in the ribs, and the first plank runs from frame #6 to the bow. Cut a section from one end of a plank as indicated, then soak the opposite end in hot water to soften it and make it more pliable (or use a plank bender to form the curve), then position the plank in the rib slot along the frames starting at frame #6 and bend it to fit around the bow, glue and pin the plank into place. Cut the end of another plank in the same way, so that it will interlock as shown in step 'f' on page 8, and run the plank from frame #6 to frame #9, then make another notch at the frame 9 end, then glue and pin the plan into place. Shape the end of another plank as earlier to fit into the grooves and fit with the plank at frame #9 to the stern frame #14. Glue and pin it into place noting that it will need a slight twist, then cut the plank flush with the stern. Cut excess plank at the bow so that it leaves the central false keel visible and will leave a 5mm gap between this and the plank to be fitted at the opposite side of the bow. Repeat the plank fitting on the left (port) side of the hull and ensure of the 5mm gap at the bow into which the stem will later be fitted, (supplied at stage 54 and fitted at stage 55). That's it for this week, carefully store the bulwark panels, gun port blanking squares and any remaining planking material. Stage 23 - Contains side panels and gun port blanking squares. Fitting the panels - Cut the panels from the fret, but don't cut the entry port doors free from the panels at this stage as they serve to retain the panel strength. Glue and pin the aft panel into place so that it its forward end aligns with the forward face of frame #8 and that it overlaps the wall panel above as shown in step 'b', and that the stern end is fitted as shown. Now fit the forward panel, again glue and pin into place following the same line, and fitted at the bow end as shown in step 'f'. Fitting the gun port blanking squares - Spread glue around the edge of a gun port blanking square, then fix into place on the inside of each gun port to blank the hole, then repeat with the rest of the gun ports on this deck level. Ensure that each blanking square is adequately glued into place as each will be drilled into later on to secure the dummy gun barrels. On the gun port which is spanned by frame 10, I opted to cut a 3mm deep slot into the frame to allow a gun port blanking square to be slid across and glued into place, rather than have two squares either side of the frame to blank the gun port as per the instructions. Repeat the panel fitting and gun port blanking square process on the opposite side of the hull using the panels supplied at stage 22 and remaining gun port blanking squares from previous content. When the glue has set, file the bow ends of the panel so they are flush with the bulkhead as shown in step 'i', and file the stern ends so they are flush with frame 14. That's it for this week. Stage 24 - Contains pin-nails, cannon set, ladder sides, hardwood strip and wood strips. Sand the extending stern frames to match the angle of the said panel but avoid the projecting part of the bottom ledge. Take the gallery panel supplied a stage 18. Smooth and stain the top quarter to match the inside of the panels previously stained. Glue the panel in place so that it sits upon the ledge projection and is central between the side panels. You will find that the side slots do not quite align and will need you will need adjustment, which for now I have left until later on when what is placed into the slots is to hand. Cut the 2x7mm hardwood strip into four lengths to line the inside edges of the large hatch aft of the foredeck. When gluing the strips into place, ensure that they sit 4mm above the deck. Repeat the process at the foredeck hatch, again position the strips 4mm above the deck. Cut the 1x4mm wood strip into 18 lengths, each 12mm long to make the step treads. Take one of the ladder sides and fit and glue the treads into it and then fit the opposite step side as shown, then repeat the process to make a second ladder. Assemble and finish the cannon as before. That's it for this week, carefully store the cannon, ladders and any left over material.
