I don't suppose anyone else is making a Hamilton on a bad day kind of model as I am, but you can use this tip on other models.
As a wash, a dark food colouring can be added to "Klear" and run around bolts, rivets, screws and panel lines etc.

In the meantime have a go on something you are not quite planning to leave as a family heirloon, it is only the same as as making a wash with thinned down paint.
