Hi Team, I wanted to know if the copper applied to the Hull of Victory in 1780 was fitted over the false keel,or was the copper fitted between the keel and the false keel, so that the false keel would still be visible uncoppered.

I needed to know this as I am copper plating the Victory X section and also my own Victory model. As you are all aware I like to make sure that everything is authentic.

I contacted Andrew Baines who is the curator of the Victory Museum and this is his reply.

As this letter clarifies the whole situation it is clear that if you want to be authentic in your build, as I do, when you have coppered the hull of the 1/84 Victory or the X section you should put a false keel over the copper that you have put on the main keel. That complies with the Victory as she was in 1805. If you are completing Victory as she was in 1816 onwards you would put a further cover of the same thickness over the false keel to simulate a metal covering of the false keel. In the case of the Deag Victory X section the parts are supplied as 1.5 x 8mm wood strips. In the case of the 1/84 Victory you would simulate it with a 1 x 8mm and trim both to fit.

I hope this information is useful to you all.

Regards,
Mike

Excellent groundwork Mike, though did the wooden planks also curve partway up the stem, or was it purely the flat part of the keel the were applied to?

Hi Mr T thank you for your kind words, as she is today the false keel finishes at the curve of the stem and the sole plate contiues over it to the water line.

Kind regards

Mike
