Hi all,

Never built a wooden ship model before or for that matter written a build dairy so both are new experiences for me.

I decided to do the painted version, one because I liked the look of HMS Victory at Trafalgar and two it’s my first wooden ship so any mistakes can hopefully be covered with paint!

The first thing I tackled was the 12 pounder gun...

Modifications: Didn’t like the look of the holes in the brass cap squares covering the trunnion so I super glued pins into the holes snipped off the protruding ends and then filed them flat.

Problems: None.

Any comments welcome...

Cheers

Chris

Next I constructed the wooden bow sections making sure all parts were square.

Modifications: None.

Problems: A lot of the rib frame parts and especially the keel extension part 2 are warped! Cursing After a quick search on the forum I found a solution thanks to every one for your help. Purchased 2 pieces of 6mm glass, soaked the parts for 20mins in warm water then put them between the glass with a heavy weight on top, now I'm waiting for them to dry out...

On to the anchor...

Modifications: Rounded the ends of the wooden stock and added 4x Bands made from 160gsm cartridge paper to simulate metal bands. Reshaped head of anchor above ring hole.

Problems: Flash marks all around the anchor, removed these with a half round and flat files.

Will be making a larger ring for the anchor details to follow. Thanks for reading...

Any comments welcome...

Cheers

Chris

Hi Mike, thanks. Been looking at the Victory enhancement parts you can supply Cool. I'm a long way off yet but I would be interested in some of them. How long will they be available?

Cheers

good to see another victory starting off.

looks like you're using aliphatic resin, watch out once you come to planking, and make sure you wipe excess of as soon as poss otherwise it may discolour the wood. i stopped using the stuff after i ended up with a small area that is now permanently yellow. the stuff is no better than pva, but costs more.

good luck with the build the cannons look good.BigGrin

Hi saintsman123 you’re right I am using aliphatic wood glue. Thanks for the good advice I will bare it in mind on the rest of the build and especially when I come to plank the hull. The reason I went for the stuff in the first place was 1) its odourless and 2) Its meant to be very easy to sand.

Glad you like the cannons and thanks again for your comments and advice.

Cheers

Chris

The warped rib frame parts are still a little wet so I've been working on the Carronade that came with issue 3.

Modifications: None built as per the magazine.

Problems: The rear wheels centre holes would not line up with the holes in the brass frame allowing the centre axel to pass through. The solution I came up with was to drill the holes larger and then elongate the holes with a round file.

Before...

After...

Finnished side to side training wheels...

I'm now awaiting delivery of a pair of flat nose pliers as soon as they arrive I will fit the rear wooden blocks and eyebolts details to follow. Thanks for reading...

Any comments most welcome...

Cheers

Chris

The flat nose pliers arrived today really pleased with the quality. So it was on with making up and attached the wooden blocks and eyebolts to the carronade. Only one to go now later in the build.

The flat nose pliers.

The finished carronade with wooden blocks and eyebolts attached.

Tip: I used a mini triangular file to make the groove all around each wooden block deeper so the wire had a much better fit.

That's it till next time thanks for reading...

Any comments or questions most welcome...

Cheers

Chris
