Are there hard and fast rules to how many planks the launch needs?

I am planking OK, but it seems I will need to use less than the magazine suggests. It seems as though 10 planks is enough for the stern, with little bits left to fill.

Is this down to variations in part size between issues?

Rob, I had 4 planks left over after planking where the mag says there will be two left.....
