My Grandfather was on one of the supporting Destroyers, he said when the announcement that Hood had sunk came over the tannoy he looked at his mate and said "i don't believe that" people thought she was the most powerful ship afloat.

R.T Grogan's Colour Footage
Tonight on Channel 4 you may already know is a 1 hour program on HMS Hood, not only is this about one of the greatest ships every to sail but it has something else that is very special and rare...unseen in public colour footage.

Ive just seen the trailer for this programme and I have to say this is THE watch of the year...the rare colour footage that has been unseen on TV before, have a look at Bruce Taylors book page 145 to 147...R.T Grogan's footage from summer 1939 & Autumn 1940, all colour.

Seeing a glimpse of this footage last night was incredible, the only colour film we have available was that great 20 secs on youtube...not any-more 'the marine detachment fallen in beside X turret at the jetty in Portsmouth in summer 1939' is just one example, film of Hood's quarterdeck port side filmed from a distance but showing her incredible size..and in (HD) High Definition.

I'm not one of those historian that are concerned or disagree about how she was sunk or who fired the fatal shot, it happened by a German ship 'fact' that's history, but what for me is more important is this rare colour footage.

saviour it, lap it up, enjoy it!

Great program but I think they made up some controversy to have a program and we learnt nothing new. We knew the turn had been orders as we saw the rudder when the wreck was originally found, bit disappointing but nice to see her in colour!

I agree with Jase, there was less 'new information' than I'd hoped for but having the accepted facts confirmed by actual evidence was good and the new colour footage will be worth its weight in gold to all us modellers.
As for the actual battle footage wasn't it just typical that the film taken of the Hood at the moment of her destruction just dipped too low to get her entire superstructure in view at the instant of the explosion! The cameraman probably had other things on his mind at the time!
I did learn something new however, I'd always thought the Barham's massive explosion was down to her boilers going up, never knew it was her magazines!

Well worth watching!

In parts it was interesting but as has already been pointed out there was no real new evidence. We knew she was turning, although unproven, educated guessing worked out that the armour over the magazines was too thin,a proposed refit to rectify this was not due until 1942...though due to budgets & other demands on shipyards may never have happened at all, this allowed high trajectory shells from Bismarck to penetrate the magazines easily..the rest we know.
One thing I was glad to see..the ships bell remains where it belongs & is more inaccessible as a result of efforts to recover it.

Was a little disappointed. No real new evidence came to light though the colour film was amazing. Like Rob I too am glad that the efforts to remove the bell failed. I just hope now that Paul Alan and the rest of these grave robbers leave well alone in the future.
