Hi,

I have decided to varnish the "Victory". Although some smaller parts may be marked they can be touched up and then varnished. A clear varnish is all you need as the material is already coloured. I will be painting the mast head etc, to emphasise these areas. This is the first wooden model I have made (I tend to work in plastic). Talking of which - have you heard about the 100th scale Airfix/Humbrol (model #11999) produced in 2005 and if so can I get hold of one?!

Best of luck with your model making.

Simon

the 1/100 victory you discribed is the original 1/100 heller, it comes up on ebay now and then, Karl113 posted this link

ian,i may be telling you something you already know, but make sure if your using oil based varnish your first 2 0r 3 coats should be thinned with white spirit,as i work in this field when i varnish wood for the first time my first coat would be 50% spirit and 50% varnish, then 75% varnish and 25% spirit and so on..it acts as a primer and has penetrated the wood..neat varnish would just sit on the top and could peel in the future..hope this helps
cheers benny

Nice advice Benny, I made sure before staining is to try it out on some scrap wood first.
I used mostly Beeswax and danish oils, worked well on my Bounty.
