Having never built a wooden boat before and having been a carpenter I thought how hard could it be!!!! Of course it had to be japanese as well because of my martial arts. I soon found there were no kits on the market and little referance material other than my trusted dvd of shogun,so using the scenes of the samurai galley from the series I produced a whole set of drawings from the dvd and proceeded to scratch build. I later found that it was due to the period of a 100years forced seclusion that all boats and plans were burnt leaving little reference material. So here is from the conception and start of the build the build diary of a 1/56 scale japanese galley. (will resize these photos over the weekend) Latest pictures start to show the cabin, bow detal and the ribs. The bow detail I had to stick slivers on and sand them down to show the tenons holding the sides on and along the beam. The sairs will come out and be rebuilt later as will the deck hatch godan61 attached the following image(s):

Godan, if you resize your images to 600 x 450 pixels you will be able to upload directly to your diary page, this would save members having to download your images to see your progress......

Hi Gandale and Mr T You're going to love this diary! I've been trying to get my old friend to post his project here for some weeks and here it is at last. The first oversized photos were an accident, we both thought coming from a camera-phone the file wouldn't be that large - back to the drawing board on that one! Godan's galley is coming on very well with a huge amount of detail and all of it scratch built too. When you consider that all the info to build the thing came solely from watching Shogun over and over again it's a very impressive project. (I keep suggesting add ons and extras, especially after some part has already been completed! , just to 'help' you understand. Thanks for that link Yutaro, neither of us knew those kits existed! Robin First wooden ship: The Grimsby 12 Gun 'Frigate' by Constructo Second: Bounty DelPrado Part Works Third: HMS Victory DelPrado Part Works 1/100 scale Diorama of the Battle of the Brandywine from the American Revolutionary War Diorama of the Battle of New Falkland (unfinished sci-fi), Great War Centenary Diorama of the Messines Ridge Assault Index for the Victory diary is on page 1

Just simply have to say, excellent work considering the background material you have to work with is exceptionally ltd. I have the Shogun series on DVD so I started to skip through it to have a look at what you are trying to create...... This I am definately interested in.... well done.....

Thanks for the comments from all of you it spurs me on. Ok this shows the mast and outriggers in place, also with the prow detail though this has now changed slightly, also the stairs have now been ripped out and a new set built. The crew access on the deck has been removed and an access hatch put in with stairsits painstaking as some of what you see has been removed and rebuilt any advice is greatfully received. godan61 attached the following image(s):

New staircase now put in showing the tenons on the strings. The railings around the ship the dificult part was getting the top set tp line up on the bow, side and stern whilst keeping 3 equal pats on the side. Stern detail showing the railings continuing around and the mast detail at the top and the main rigging and pullies to raise the sail all working, next is to make the sail complete with mon and the spar. godan61 attached the following image(s):

Ok new hatch cut into the deck with stairs, main sail and rigging with ashot of the hull at the bow. The jpanese idea of securing riging is tie it to the rails, extremelly happy with the way the sail came out though, godan61 attached the following image(s):
