Hi guys,
I am building the hms victory.
Trying to plank at the moment the launch. I chose to start the build with the launch to practice planking as I have to lots of material for the launch in the event I stumble.
My question is do I use hot, warm or cold water to soak the planks?
I am using an electric plank bender.

Thank you.
Ames

BigGrin Hi Ames
use hot water but not boiling to soak the planks as this will penetrate the wood better, just be carefull with the wood for the launch as its quite thin. Hope this helps

Hi there Ames

Andy beat me to it! I've never used an electric plank bender but whichever method you use it's all a balance between heat and time. Hottish water will soften the planks quicker than warm water which is itself quicker than cold. If you know when you are going to be doing the bending, leaving the wood soaking in cold overnight will be just the same as using hot water half an hour before you start!

Good luck with the launch and welcome to the postings!

PS are the bush fires anywhere near you? stay safe.

Ames, have to add I use an electric plank bender and so far to date I have not had to soak any planks..... I let the heat of the bender do the work without adding excess pressure and so far no problems have been experienced...... You will find your own way of achieving the results you desire.... good luck m8....Cool Cool

Regards

Alan

Thanks boys.
Great advise I will tinker and learn.
Lucky I bought to of every copy of the launch 2 fold. Leaves room for error.
I am not close to the bush fires and thank you for asking.

For the launch the easiest way to bend the planks is hold it between thumb & forefinger with your thumbnail touching the wood, then gently pull the wood through applying pressure with finger & thumb, you can also add a twist to the plank this way as well. This method won't work on the planks for the ship though.
Good luck.
