Hi All.

I've just sent off for a pot of Carrs Metal Black for Steel (which, according to various sources also works on brass and solder). What I need to know is does this concoction have any bad effects on wood?
What I'm intending is to scratch build the chains on my Victory (DelPrado) instead of using the kit parts (real chains!). I'm hoping I can bend the brass around the wooden dead eyes to create the securing link which fixes the dead eyes in the chain plates and then dunk the whole assembly (but not including the chain plates!) to blacken the brass. The wooden dead eyes would be painted black first which should protect them to some extent but has anybody tried this before and if so, any bad effects? (like the wooden bits dissolving I mean!Blushing )
Thanks for any experiences (good or bad!)BigGrin

My feeling is that it would attack the wood and paint with all sorts of nasty effects, because its main ingredient is quite a strong acid. But it's an interesting idea which would be worth a trial on some wood and paint. There are blackening gels which you can paint on to selected ares which might be more appropriate, I haven't used them myself.

Thanks for the comments guys.

What I was hoping to try was to form the brass wire around the wooden deadeye forming a smaller 'ring' below it (like a figure 8) and then solder the two ends of the lower ring leaving the deadeye 'imprisoned' inside the brass with the smaller ring then able to take the thin brass wire chain segments which would also be soldered shut. The problem being if I blackened the brass first I don't think it would take the solder on top.
I do have some not very good deadeyes left over from the Grimsby (malformed holes etc) so I think experimentation is the way to try it out!
Once the Carrs arrives I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes! Blink

Thanks again

Robin

Hi there Moriarty

Just had a look on your Surprise diary, a really brilliant piece of modelling there! Well done indeed!Cool
Yes, the way you did your chains was pretty much the way I was planning to, only difference is I was going to solder the ends of my chains (hence the need for the Carrs Metal Black for Steel instead of just brass).
One thing, those little figure of eight pieces which fix the chains to the hull, did you scratch build them or were they from your spares box? If you made them I'd love to learn how!Blushing

Many thanks for your advice.

Hi Robin, the pieces you are on about came with the Surprise and anything else is crafted somehow but my spares box has been working overtime on this one. I have even been raiding Harty,s Victory build for the odd bitLaugh Laugh . I suppose you could make something similar out of brass strip, not so curvy maybe but rounded on the ends, big job thoughBlink . Good luck
