I thought i would add something a bit more specialist for thouse amoungst us who have an interest in military history. There may not be an update every day but you will be surprised how much there will be!!BigGrin

On 2nd February
On this day in 1943, the last of the German forces fighting at Stalingrad surrender, despite Hitler's earlier declaration that "Surrender is out of the question. The troops will defend themselves to the last!"

At daybreak on this day in 1916 a downed airship was spotted by a fishing trawler partially submerged in the North Sea. The skipper and his crew waited at a safe distance until daylight when they confirmed the wreckage was that of a German zeppelin with the identification mark L-19. With three of its four engines failing, the L-19 had reportedly come under Dutch fire, which punctured its gas cells and brought it down, killing some of the crew. The Zeppelin was 1 of 9 returning from a raid the previous day. The raid of January 31, 1916, by nine zeppelins was one of the largest Britain saw during the war. The Germans bombed the West Midlands towns of Bradley, Tipton, Wednesbury and Walsall. Across the region, more than 70 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the attacks.

On this day in Russia, the February Revolution (known as such because of Russia's use of the Julian calendar) begins when riots and strikes over the scarcity of food erupt in Petrograd. A short civil war lasting a week leads to the end of centuries of czarist rule in Russia with the abdication of Nicholas II. with this act Russia took a dramatic step closer toward communist revolution.

Also on this day in 1917, President Woodrow Wilson speaks for two hours before a historic session of Congress to announce that the United States is breaking diplomatic relations with Germany. Due to the reintroduction of the German navy's policy of unlimited submarine warfare, announced two days earlier by Chancellor Theobald von Bethmann Hollwegg, Wilson announced that his government had no choice but to cut all diplomatic ties with Germany in order to uphold the honor and dignity of the United States. Though he maintained that We do not desire any hostile conflict with the German government, Wilson nevertheless cautioned that war would follow if Germany followed through on its threat to sink American ships without warning.

On this day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Premier Joseph Stalin meet at Yalta, in the Crimea, to discuss and plan the postwar world—namely, to address the redistribution of power and influence. It had already been determined that a defeated Germany would be sliced up into zones occupied by the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union, the principal Allied powers. Once in Germany, the Allies would see to the deconstruction of the German military and the prosecution of war criminals. A special commission would also determine war reparations. It is at Yalta that many place the birth of the Cold War.

Nice ones there Jase!

I especially like the one about the Soviet Union in 1940. Towards the end of last year I watched a TV program about modern Russia under Putin and it mentioned the new official history books being issued to teach Russian children, according to those books in 1940 the Glorious Soviet Union was fighting against Nazi Fascism whilst Britain and the western allies continued their policy of appeasement! Apparently the Battle of Britain was just a figment of our imagination!Cursing

Keep them coming!
