1943 More than 150 B-17 and 112 B-24 bombers attack Rome for the first time.

1942 German U-boats are withdrawn from positions off the U.S. Atlantic coast due to American anti-submarine countermeasures.

1918 The end of World War I approached as the German army began retreating across the Marne River in France

1870 France declares war on Prussia.

1545 King Henry VIII of England watches his flagship, Mary Rose, capsize as it leaves to battle the French. The Mary Rose, the pride of Henry VIII's battle fleet, sank in the Solent with the loss of 700 lives. (The ship was raised on 11th October 1982 to be taken to Portsmouth Dockyard.)


1333 Wars of Scottish Independence: The English won a decisive victory over the Scots at the Battle of Halidon Hill, near Berwick-upon-Tweed. In England the victory, the first for many years, brought a great boost to the morale of the nation. Bannockburn had finally been avenged.

1881 Sioux chief Sitting Bull surrenders to the U.S. Army.

1867 Imperial troops in Guizhou, China, kill 20,000 Miao rebels.

1588 The Spanish Armada sets sail from Corunna.

1402 Tamerlane's Mongols defeat Ottoman Turks at Angora.

1304 The fall of Stirling Castle in the Wars of Scottish Independence. King Edward I of England took the stronghold using the 'War Wolf', a type of catapult that used the energy of a raised counterweight to throw a projectile. Ten years later Stirling Castle was recaptured by the Scots, an event that was the immediate cause of the Battle of Bannockburn in which Edward Longshanks's son, Edward II, came with an army two or three times the Scottish numbers, and lost.

1943 Palermo, Sicily surrenders to General George S. Patton's Seven

1881 The first volume of The War of the Rebellion: A compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, is published.

1814 Five Indian tribes in Ohio make peace with the United States and declare war on Britain.

1812 A British army under the Duke of Wellington defeats the French at Salamanca, Spain.

1298 King Edward I defeats Scots under William Wallace at Falkirk. The English used longbows for the first time, the Scottish pikemen were cut to pieces by Edward I's archers.

1942 The Soviet city of Rostov is captured by German troops.

1943 The start of Operation Gomorrah saw British and Canadian aeroplanes bomb Hamburg by night, and Americans by day. By the end of the operation in November, 9,000 tons of explosives had killed more than 30,000 people and destroyed 280,000 buildings.

1411 The Battle of Harlaw, took place On This Day, just north of Inverurie in Aberdeenshire. It was one of a series of battles fought during the Middle Ages between the barons of northeast Scotland against those from the west coast and was one of the bloodiest battles in Scottish history.

1943 World War II: The Allies mounted one of the largest raids of the war – sending more than 1,000 aircraft to bomb the German industrial city of Hamburg. An estimated 60,000 people were killed.

1918 Britain's top war ace, Edward Mannock, is shot down by ground fire on the Western Front.

1794 The French defeat an Austrian army at the Battle of Fleurus, France.

1758 British forces capture France's Fortress of Louisbourg after a seven-week siege.

1469 Wars of the Roses: The Battle of Edgecote Moor (northeast of Banbury - Oxfordshire) took place It pitted the forces of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick against those of Edward IV and was considered to be an important turning point in the course of the war.

657 Mu'awiyan defeats Caliph Ali in the Battle of Siffin in Mesopotamia.

1945 After delivering parts of the first atomic bomb to the island of Tinian, the U.S.S. Indianapolis is sunk by a Japanese submarine. The survivors are adrift for two days before help arrives.

1915 U.S. Marines land at Port-au-Prince to protect American interests in Haiti.

1693 The Army of the Grand Alliance is destroyed by the French at the Battle of Neerwinden.

1588 The Spanish Armada was sighted off the coast of Cornwall. The English fleet under the command of Charles Howard and Francis Drake set sail from Plymouth, to establish the birth of British naval supremacy.

1967 General William Westmoreland claims that he is winning the war in Vietnam, but needs more men.

1940 A bombing lull ends the first phase of the Battle of Britain.

1864 In an effort to penetrate the Confederate lines around Petersburg. Union troops explode a mine underneath the Confederate trenches but fail to break through. The ensuing action is known as the Battle of the Crater.

1799 The French garrison at Mantua, Italy, surrenders to the Austrians.

2007 The British Army's longest continual operation, Operation Banner (1969-2007), ends as British troops withdraw from Northern Ireland.

1970 Black Tot Day occurred On This Day. It was the last day of the officially sanctioned rum ration in the Royal Navy that dated back to 1665. It was poured as usual at 6 bells in the forenoon watch (11am) after the pipe of 'up spirits'. Some sailors wore black armbands, tots were 'buried at sea' and in one navy training camp there was a mock funeral procession complete with black coffin and accompanying drummers and piper.

1944 The Soviet army takes Kovno, the capital of Lithuania.

1917 The third Battle of Ypres commences as the British attack the German lines.

1760 Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick, drives the French army back to the Rhine River.

904 Arabs capture Thessalonica.

1957 US and Canada create North American Air Defense Command (NORAD).

1950 Lead elements of the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division arrive in Korea from the United States

1944 The Polish underground begins an uprising against the occupying German army, as the Red Army approaches Warsaw. The Polish expected the Red army to Warsaw at any moment to support the uprising, but the Red Army halted its advance. Officially the USSR stopped the advance to not over extend its supply line, but in reality it was a cynical attempt at letting the Germans destroy the resistance ahead of Soviet occupation and subsequent control.

1943 Over 177 B-24 Liberator bombers attack the oil fields in Ploesti, Rumania, for a second time.

1942 Ensign Henry C. White, while flying a J4F Widgeon plane, sinks U-166 as it approaches the Mississippi River, the first U-boat sunk by the U.S. Coast Guard.

1914 World War I began with Germany's invasion of Luxembourg. The same day, Germany and Russia declared war against each other.

1880 Sir Frederick Roberts frees the British Afghanistan garrison of Kandahar from Afghan rebels.

1798 Admiral Horatio Nelson routs the French fleet in the Battle of the Nile at Aboukir Bay, Egypt. Stopping Napoleon Bonaparte's plans to invade the Middle East.

1759 British and Hanoverian armies defeat the French at the Battle of Minden, Germany.

1664 The Turkish army is defeated by French and German troops at St. Gotthard, Hungary.


1096 The crusaders under Peter the Hermit reach Constantinople.

1973 A U.S. plane accidentally bombs a Cambodian village, killing 400 civilians.

1964 Congress overwhelmingly passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, allowing the president to use unlimited military force to prevent attacks on U.S. forces.

1944 German forces launch a major counter attack against U.S. forces near Mortain, France.

1942 The U.S. 1st Marine Division under General A. A. Vandegrift lands on the islands of Guadalcanal and Tulagi in the Solomon islands. This is the first American amphibious landing of the war.

1647 At the Battle of Dungans Hill in County Meath, English Parliamentary forces defeated Irish forces. The battle was very bloody, with over 3000 deaths, and had important political repercussions. It contributed to the collapse of the Confederate cause and the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in 1649.

1636 The invading armies of Spain, Austria and Bavaria are stopped at the village of St.-Jean-de-Losne, only 50 miles from France.

1588 In a nine-hour battle off Gravelines, the English fleet engaged with the Spaniards in their last naval confrontation. The defeat of the Armada saved England from invasion and the action has enduring historical significance as the first major naval gun battle under sail.

1628 The Swedish warship Vasa capsizes and sinks in Stockholm harbor on her maiden voyage.

1582 Russia ends its 25-year war with Poland.

1557 French troops are defeated by Emmanuel Philibert's Spanish army at St. Quentin, France.

955 Otto organizes his nobles and defeats the invading Magyars at the Battle of Lechfeld in Germany.

991 At the Battle of Maldon (Essex) the English were defeated by a band of inland-raiding Vikings. After the battle, Archbishop Sigeric of Canterbury and aldermen advised King Aethelred to buy off the Vikings rather than continue the armed struggle. The result was a payment of 10,000 Roman pounds (3,300 kg) of silver.

1898 Manila, the capital of the Philippines, falls to the U.S. Army.

1862 Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest defeats a Union army under Thomas Crittenden at Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

1787 The Ottoman Empire declares war on Russia.

1704 French and Bavarian forces were routed by a combined British, German and Dutch army at the Battle of Blenheim, in Bavaria . The victors lost 6,000 soldiers compared with 21,000 French and Bavarian troops. Blenheim has gone down in history as one of the turning points of the War of the Spanish Succession.

1680 War starts when the Spanish are expelled from Santa Fe, New Mexico, by Indians under Chief Pope.

1521 Cortes captures the city of Tenochtitlan, Mexico, and sets it on fire.
