Good morning all. I've been so impressed with following others on this site, watching their builds take shape and seeing the positive response and encouragement they receive even when things don't go according to plan, that i have decided to create my own build log (quivers with anticipation...and a certain amount of fear! ). Ok, first things first. I was a late enroller, so i have only just received issue 6. Prior to that i wanted to wait to start my build until there had been progress made on the official build, and to see if anyone had any early tips. Sure enough the tips are coming thick and fast. Ordered various bits off the internet, including some square brackets for a jig, and a few basic tools. first job: cadged a plank of wood from a relative, marked it out using Tomrick's template (many thanx for that), and made my Keel Jig!(pics to follow).

Yes, welcome aboard. No need to be fearful, you are certainly not alone in this build and, if you are prepared to receive constructive critique, you will find no shortage of people prepared to help. Making a build diary and posting pics will keep your determination up in the face of any adversity and, as you have noted, this forum is a friendly place, so no-one is going to rip you to shreds if things go a bit pear shaped, quite the opposite in fact. I look forward to seeing your build progress. Schnellboots on back burner

Building the BowThis bit was relatively straight forward, except part 1 was warped. Tried both methods to straighten it out (soaking and use of wifes staem iron). WILL need tweeking later to get perfectly straight. I don't know if you can see it, but it warps in 2 directions!!!Can't get it straight, so have requested another issue 1 to replace.

Building the bow (cont'd) Ok, After (unsuccessfully) trying to straighten the bow part No.1, i continued to make progress. I have built up the bulkheads, and the bow-formers. All ok there i think. After talking to Tomick, i am going to request another main bow part (no.1). I am not happy with my attempt to straighten it, it warped in two directions. Will have to wait and see if they will allow this. Tried to build the Launch. Had a mishap with 5th rib which completely shattered!!! The keel part was already broken when i received it, so have ordered a back-order of issue 6. I will get it right

Ok, while i await delivery of re-ordered issue 6, i will carry on with the main build. As you can see all went well with this part of the build.

Ok all, issue 6 has arrived, as has my relacement issue 1. First job: remove old keel part one and replace with new one. After a bit of ironing (at least that's what i told the wife i was doing) i slid a long blade between the strenghener blocks and away she came!!! Glued new keel part in and it looks 100% better . I have had a practic at planking onthe launch while i was waiting for a new issue 6. NOT GOOD! I need more of a bevel on the bow formers. Think i need to invest in a Dremel (or other such brand name), so i can get better between the ribs. Will need one on the Big Sister (Victory) anyway. More pics when i can

If I were you, should you get one, I would get plenty of practice in with your Dremel before getting it anywhere near your Victory build. Whilst an incredibly versatile and useful tool, the potential ultra-violence it could wreak on delicate wooden parts such as those found on the launch, would make it more of a liability than a boon. I'd stick to using a flat needle file and variety of grades of wet & Dry paper on the launch - you'll get sensory feedback if something is going wrong, hopefully before it is too late whereas a dremel is capable of eating your launch and spitting it out before you know what's happening. I'd still invest in one mind - I got a nice Proxxon version to replace my worn and abused dremel and I am most happy with it so far - smooth and deceptively quiet. Schnellboots on back burner

I agree with Stedders, BUT, use only various grades of sandpaper superglued to a thin stick of wood, even lolly sticks with one end some sandpaper and the oher end another grade, belive me you will use this all the time, and you can feel what your sanding as well, try it, its cheap and free, and you get to eat the lolly first. you may think its too small but youll see what I mean when you start sanding those launch ribs.
