Hi there to all you Surprise builders. I am posting this new topic to try and make you aware of a potential blunder to do with the gunports. The plans and photographs depict the doors as sitting open. This in its self is not a problem but if you want to depict some of them closed then there is a problem in being that they will sit proud of the hull unless you have rebated the openings to allow the door to sit inside the opening flush with the hull ,which I think is correct and will look better anyway. I have been looking through the builds and I reckon nearly everybody has not rebated to allow this. If you check contemperary pictures of Surprise (HMS Rose) the doors are flush as with the Victory or probably just about any other ship you could come across. On my build I elected to make my own doors from scratch with working hinges so mine fit flush. I did this just to get on with the build and it happened almost by accident that it turned out this way. I used one door template for all the openings and just installed linings while the door was in place. Any feedback on this will be interesting and I know a lot of you are past this stage but am I right or wrong and if you can fix it will you fix itCrying.

You are probably right, it would be better if the doors went into a rebate, with the doors being flush with he hull,

I left my linings to the gun ports out slightly to give me a edge to paint to, not thinking that far ahead, if I was to have the gun port doors closed, they would be flush with the horizontal timbers, I am going to have all but the two at he rear open,

I have learn't such a lot about ship building, since I have joined this forum, on this build I am not to concerned about thing being 100% accurate, If I do another build, which I probably will do, I will have a different view from the start. But all in all, I am more than happy with the quality of my build so far, it has exceeded my thoughts of how it would turn out, THERE IS STILL TIME FOR IT ALL TO GO HORRIBLY WRONG.
And thanks again Ian for all your support.

I will keep posting my blog.

BigGrin Hi Moriarty
Im no expert on period ships but I agree with what your saying if only for water tightness and prevention of losing a gun port that's sticking out in a storm. My point being that flush gun ports are less likely to be removed by storm/wave action whereas non flush give an edge to be worked loose in a storm, just my thoughts on the matter

Hi there Moriarty.

You are correct about the gun port lids fitting flush. On my DelPrado Victory the closed lids unfortunately don't fit flush, they stand slightly proud because that's the way they were cast and there was little I could do about it!
On the open gunports I did rebate into the thickness of the wales to allow the impression of fitting 'into' the hull. If any Surprise builders have already gone past this stage they might get away with adding a thin strip of wood, 1 or 2mm square maybe, inside the thickness of the gun port to form an inner frame which, again would give the impression of the lid fitting inside (even though it couldn't actually fit!)
At least it would be easier than rebuilding all the lids!!BigGrin

I like the sound of the " impression " of it fitting flush, had I not been so far on, I would have done that, I will bear it in mind for next time.
