Hi,
Well, where to start.

There I was clearing out this cupboard and started finding stuff relating to the EX of 16 years ago.
Nothing very interesting to start with Bored (all stuff for the rubbish dump) then I found Blink, a long forgotten model I had started.

Now I find an old ice cream tub with bits in it as well, so now thinking this has potentialCool

The first pics show box contents and deck items just placed on deck ,nothing fixed.

So far the find was looking good.Cool

ThenCrying the bad news.
When I started this I had no help only the instructions in the box(not that good)

So if this is to be finished I need to correct the issues shown in the latter pics of this post.

Now, there is only four rows of planking on it at the moment, so may be if I can get them off
it may be possible to save the old girl from the tip.

Any comments or suggestions, feel free to post.

Regards

Cheers karl,
Will give it a go, basically I got nothing to lose by taking off the planking and see what I can do to correct the problems, it won`t cost anything to take a shot at the basics.BigGrin

That looks like it could be a little beaut. Looks big enough to try out an exercise in trenailing all over then it really would stand out. Why dont you give it a lash cos it will add a lot of charactor to it. The little problems you have spotted are easily corrected. Looking forward to see what you decide on this one Delboy, wish I had it, I would love itLove Love Drool Laugh BigGrin

BigGrin Hi Derek
Now you can see the pitfall of not fairing the hull formers and the resulting wobbly results some gentle application of warm water should hopefully soften the wood glue to remove them and good luck with a pretty little ship

Then the bad news: old planks seriously dried out, so will need to replace them and then got to hope rest of wood in box is not the same.

So CMB here I come, this one ain`t getting away now I got the bit between my teethFlapper

Hi All,
This is only a small update, but done to show I`m really going for this one.
Having removed the old planks (as few as they were),I decided that a good move, considering some ribs were not 100% and with Gandale`s advice, was to balsa infill.

Only the rough infill at the moment, but my intention from here is to shape the balsa near to the ribs.
I say near to the ribs because a few of the ribs are not proud enough from the centre false keel and I will need to build these ribs up a bit to get the correct hull shape.
I will be using the balsa shape to help show me how far the offending ribs will need building up.
Any advise and/or comments will be gratefully accepted.

Hi All, BigGrin
This is an update on the hull of my ELBE build/recovery build.
Having removed the few grotty planks and done a bit of a clean-up, I done the balsa infill bit(rough - see post 12).
From that point I went for the basic shaping bit, which had to account for the rib shape problems,so I stopped shaping around the problem ribs a bit early.

Basic shaping:Pics 1+2

So at this point it`s time to build-up the duff ribs, used a bit of bamboo off-cut on one as a test (from SOTS).Pic 3.

From here, I went for the stern as the old planks were sitting on a knife edge, purely because my idea of fairing when I started this (**) years ago was zero.Pic 4.

Following on from building up the ribs, I continued shaping from the stern toward the bow on both sides leaving some spare infil around the built up ribs. Pic 5.

Now I had to make a decision, do I carry on fairing from the stern forward, or do I fair the bow and then work to the middle correcting faulty ribs as I go. I faired from the bow.Pic 6.

Now, having gone down the line I`ve taken, I`m ready for the comments I am sure you may have.

Feel free to comment/critic, I am trying to get to a point now where I make my decisions and then have to work with them decisions, or if I`m wrong take it on the chin.LOL LOL LOL

hi del,you will find it easier to do bow, then stern and leave the easy bit till last(middle) half round rasp file I found to be the best on the stern, and rough sanding block for the rest.

Cheers Karl,
Thanks for looking in, got the bow and stern pretty much spot on,got to build up one more rib before tackling the more central section.
Got the tools you mention and agree with the choice, especially the half round it does the shaped bits just right.

Hi All,
Just a very short update as I now have the hull to it`s final shape.
Will pick up on the planking when I come back from me Hols and got some replacement strip wood.
Here`s the result of several hours of rib building and balsa shaping:
