That's a wonderful, if slightly eccentric piece of art.
I love it !

Aside from the curious colouration of the sails, its rather cool. I do hope that the bottle is made of incredibly robust glass . What is slightly worrying is that someone from Admin reads that lefty rag, the Times. *Harrumph* Schnellboots on back burner

This is already the subject of a post started by Tomick. Nelson's Ship in a BottleI find it rather sad that a presumably workmanlike model of the Victory has been adulterated by the addition of totally inappropriate materials for the sails and then to add insult to injury installed in the very place which pays homage to the senior service and Admiral Lord Nelson in particular. Also you can't see the hull properly only the rags on the masts because the plinth is too high! You might gather that I am no fan of so-called contemporary art, give me Turner's 'Fighting Temeraire' any day. That is a truly great work of art. BTW the bottle apparently is made of perspex and was imported from Italy. Mike T

The artist's reasons for using "rags" for the sails are explained in the link at the beginning of this thread. However it does seem a rather tenuous link and IMHO hardly appropriate. I spent many years living and working in central london and always marvelled at the extent of the monument which not only includes the column but the square and beyond. The model (or whatever it is called) just seems to me to be out of place. I appreciate that sometimes we need a bit of shake up in our artistic outlook and some times a different view is welcome... but this just does not work! The piece installed a gallery with a long spiel explaining the motivation behind the work might have a better impact on the viewer, but in the hallowed ground of T. square ..no.no.no.I say..NO. Having said that as a wannabe model maker I respect the effort that has gone into it's construction. http://entertainment.tim..._arts/article7135316.ece

What an appauling concept. This only goes to show the continued deterioration of today's society. The best place for this is the bottle bank!!! ArtfulBodger Previous Build: HMS. Bounty

Didn't they just get voted out of office? The only hung parliament I would have liked to have seen was the last one, preferably by the neck for high treason. Schnellboots on back burner

You could bring him back but he would never get hold of enough gun powder, could try importing fireworks but would experience the red-tape and health and safety!! He would also need to apply for a firing licence! However it would make a good reality TV show, the audience could vote for who not to save each week?? Mike T

I hope this topic doesnt turn into a political rant (me included) but interesting that this piece of art (not sure if that is the correct way of putting it) has opened a debate, maybe those who know nothing of HMS Victory or even more where the bottle sits and why, and ask themselves who that gezzer is on the big pole?
I know, but I asked my youngest daughter tonight after she mentioned about the 4th plinth thingy what she knew of Trafalgar Square...she said they had lots of pidgeons...mmmmm To be serious thought the youngsters today will ask question about the ship in a bottle and learn from it, they then will relise where they are standng and who the bloke is on the big pole. Our heritage.
