I've recently acquired a copy of this book 'How (not) to Paint a Locomotive'.
It covers everything you could ever want to know about painting a Model Locomotive and everything that could ever go wrong. Very interesting advice on Gloss v Matt/Satin Finishes, surface prep and primers.

A quick update here I've now cancelled my order for the book, on reflection I think this would be more suited for a larger loco than the D51, Blushing although parts of the book maybe relevant I think I jumped the gun in ordering before re-reading the reviews.
I am sure that this is still an excellent book as per Andy's post.

Hi everybody, a newbie here.

Before I subscribe, can someone let me know, if I decide to paint, do the instructions specify which parts are painted, and what colour?

Thanks for reading.

Nothing that I have seen in the instructions suggest paint colours. There are some good pictures at the start of Tomicks Build Diary that show what's black and what's not. Personally I'm so impressed with the quality of the parts I've received that mine is staying natural, as God and Deagostini intended.

So far, the only painting instructions have been in despatch 06 about painting the wheels black.
Its too early at this stage to say what other painting instructions will be provided, I suspect there will be much more info, but don't hold me to it.
There are lots of reference photos of the real thing available to be able to paint without need of instructions, and lots of help on here for how to set about doing it.

An update..

A two option painting tutorial will be provided: Clear coat and Black paint.

The tutorials will be included within the instructions from Stage #92 to #100.
