Hi Lads.

I am coming near the end of planking the lower hull and my mind is getting carried away..no harm I guess. I am trying to decide how i want the finished hull to look after the second planking. I realy believe this is very important to the finished project. There are some amazing jobs on here especialy Nigels !!! That guy is a serious talent. Anyway I really like the timber finish and I notice some of you guys used different timber for the outer planking with some amazing results.I will be using the timber supplied and want to know can I get the desired caulking with the black marker effect with this timber and also can it be sanded and what type of stain can i use on it. I really like the light timber effect that nigel has. I also intend to spend the winter nights tree nailing it. How does that go ? drill hole insert cocktail stick cut off and stain ? Any advise here would be fantastic. Sorry if i ask alot but I really need to get this in my head so I know what I am moving towards. Thanks folks.

Hi Neon
As regards having to stain the lime planking, you shouldn't need to.The maple I used on the underside is virtually the same colour as the supplied lime. The light honey colour is produced by the tint in the varnish. All normal clear wood varnish has this tint to it to protect from UV and 'enhance'the beauty of the wood.Regarding treenailing, you can either use cocktail sticks,or woodfiller like I did with mine. For cocktail sticks, have a look at Alan's (Gandale)build as he gives a pretty clear description of how to go about it.I covered the filler method in my build, but if you want to go this route, just ask if you need anymore info.
Thank you for the kind compliments.
Kind Regards Nigel

Cheers Nigel

Thanks for the advice. I think I will go the filler method that you have used. It seems to have the desired effect without as much work. I will read up on your diary to see how it is done. Did you use the black marker for caulking and then varnish over the whole thing. Fantastic effect. I know every model on here is unique to that person and they all look superb I just feel that the outer hull finish on yours is something I would love for mine.
