hi all can anyone tell me do you have to trim the small nail that fits into the
brass piece on the canon

Use side cutters or the cutting part of pliers.

I assume by 'the brass piece' you are referring to the pivot that the carronade barrel rests on. Many of us decided that the barrel is too high if you use the brass piece described in the instructions. I suggest that before you carry on, you might like to try using the search facility on the forum. Made my trunnion out of Green stuff.Cool
bit fiddly but makes for a much more realistic look.
