Hi All, Over the last couple of days I`ve had a trial with gold leaf. My intention is to gold leaf the ornamentation of the Sots. Here is a pic of my first ever attempt.See pic below I`m fairly pleased with this as a first try, but as can be seen, some edges could do with a slight clean up to sharpen them and a couple of small bits could do with a little infill with more gold. All in all it has given me the confidence that the task is not beyond my capabilities and it can only get easier with more practice. If anybody wants I`ll do a know-how, or might even have a go at a short article. More to follow then. Hi Derek, looks really good and am sure will look even better as you get your technique perfected... I for one would certainly be interested in seeing you put together a tutorial or article on how to apply and use gold leaf.. am sure many others would find it interesting too... .. I've been online looking at gold leaf prices and to be honest I think they are very reasonable. Have never used it before but would be willing to give it a go..... Well done and good luck... Regards Alan

Regards Alan Hi Alan, I have sussed out the pitfalls very easily on my first attempt. The cost as you say is not excessive, due to the fact that from my limited knowledge, I understand that the gold is 24 carat dutch gold. (Very cheap for some reason ) Don`t go for the cheapest on the market as this is some kind of fibre backing with a micron thin layer of gold on it. I`m erring on the side of an article(Just in case it gets published) but am willing to p.m any info you may require in the meantime. Regards Alan Hi Alan, The way I look at the time aspect is like this. 1: Need an undercoat 2: Need the "bole" coat 3: Apply the gold Three coats in total, only number 3 takes more time than painting. Having now finished the first piece, I can see ways to save time with the gilding and do a better job with the first application. I am on holiday (at home for two weeks) starting Monday, so will be experimenting with different processes. Will update with the results as and when they happen. WATCH this SPACE Good luck with your build Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Never tried anything like it before, so just took the proverbial "Bull by the horns" and gave it a go. Stumbled a little here and there, but got what I think is a good first time result. With a few process tweaks I`m sure it will get better and quicker!! Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Martyn Ingram wrote: Wow looking good Derek the gold looks stunning Rgd Martyn Hi Martyn, Many thanks for looking in. I`m working on a plan to speed things up just a little. Whilst not losing quality. Maybe some sort of a production line to keep things tripping along, but it will take as long as it takes cos I ain`t stopping now. May have to set up some kind of work board, so as to keep track of part numbers and relative parts or it could get a bit . Will update as things progress and they will, as I`ve just ordered some more gold leaf. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

I don't know if it's still available but just about this time of year, every year they have egg coloring kits for Easter come out. They have a special "metallic" egg coloring kit that is basically golf-leafing in various colors (silver, gold, purple, red, blue etc). I have a couple of these cheap kits in my toolbox for doing chrome plating and gold-leafing. They work very well. Matter of fact I did an entire MPC C-3PO in the egg coloring gold-leafing and it came out looking spectacular. Just thought I would throw in my two cents and give an alternative for the more expensive gold-leafing kits that are out there. The Egg Coloring kits got for about $3.00 U.S. (Maybe 1.5 lbs UK)... compared to the $8-10 gold-leafing kits that are out there. And one of the nice things is the extra colors for experimenting with.

Hi, There is "Gold Leaf" and "Gold Leaf". The gold leaf I`ve used for my SOTS build is "NOT" edible. I repeat "NOT EDIBLE". There are versions of gold leaf that are edible and any advertising should say if it`s edible or not. Please do not purchase anything you cannot guarantee edible.
