Hi Foz.
I couldn't remember if it was port or starboard either so I had to look it up!
To be 'historically' accurate you should go from the number 1 deadeye on the starboard side (No 1 is the one closest the bow) up to the platform or cross tree, round the mast and back down to the number 2 deadeye on the same side. This is then followed by the number 1 and 2 on the port side with the loop around the mast resting on top of the first one and then numbers 3 and 4 on the starboard side and so on etc. etc.
You could however try a hybrid approach which is closer to the instructions and go from number 1, up to the mast and then
around the mast and back down to number 1 on the opposite side. This would keep to the instruction plan but still give you the loops around the mast.
If you do go for the 'proper' way, note that the shrouds are actually lashed together for a foot or so from where they come away from the mast (It's flaming difficult to get in there to do that though!)
Best of luck with it whichever one you go for!
