Hello Everyone, I bought issue 1 yesterday and have now decided to collect these issues as I have wanted to build this model for a while now.

Part one comes with the entire false keel and 4 frames plus the flag and rigging which you probably wont need for 2 yearsBigGrin

The instructions look very good, and although there are references to take care with knives etc, the kit is actually aimed at adults with children building alongside under supervision.

The mdf quality seems very good - there are no references to mdf safety anywhere in the mag so I would have to assume that this is the mdf made in Europe under strict regulations,ie, ultra low or zero formaldehyde emissions. I will be collecting issues for a while, at least until I get all the frames but as there are only 15 frames and I have 4 already this may be sooner than I thoughtBigGrin

That said, ALL dust, regardless of whether it comes from MDF or any other material, is potentially harmful, and therefore precaution should be taken when sanding or spraying. Also formaldehyde occurs naturally in wood, therefore zero formaldehyde is not the case.

That's correct, I actually meant zero formaldehyde used in the binding agent during manufactureBigGrin
Also, there may well be a warning about the dust when they get to the issue where you have to sand the frames

BTW, I plan to have mine the grey colour with weathering and it is also going to be my first venture with lighting - all that cabin and below deck detail will look great with some flickering candle lightBigGrin

BigGrin Hi Steve
Nice start, one word of warning about the MDF try and find out where it was made this should answer the formaldehyde question, basicley the further east you go the less likely it is to be the safe stuff

Hi Steve, BigGrin

Take a look at microminiatures.

They do flicker units for dolls houses.

These are meant to replicate candles and oil lamps.

Here`s a link.

Issue 1 tells you to sand the internal and external edges of the frames Blink

Rustins have a quick drying MDF clear sealer that allows the application of both paints or varnishes, unlike MDF primers which can only be painted.

Hi Steve, you bit the bullet then! Like you I have been wanting to do the Black Pearl for ages, but really didn't fancy going the Chinese way, Well that makes 2 English builders on here so far, I am going to stock up on parts first before I make a proper start, (Just glued keel up!!! LOL )

Thanks Mr T for the link, I have used the rustins stuff a lot but only on big pieces (8ftx4ft), cant see it being a problem on this, if anything it will keep the moisture out.

Enjoy the build Steve, Its time for the curse again!!!

Happy Building, Russ

Yes Russ, will be waiting a while, will be hard thoughBigGrin . I had been dithering about buying the chinese one but replace all the stripwood with better quality (the 2010 version which looked OK). Then I thought about the Zvezda plastic kit which is supposed to be very good....and then this came along just at the right momentBigGrin
Cheers

Hi Steve,BigGrin

Now that figure head looks the real deal,Confused

My thoughts are, why supply that item so far in advance?

Are they trying to snare people into a complete subscription that may not be completed if interest runs out?

I really hope that is not the case but, I havn`t seen anywhere that they say all parts are guaranteed as Deag do.(That`s why I`ve not started this build)

I don`t want to put you off by any extent but perhaps I`m a sceptic and don`t trust anyone.

Interested in your thoughts

Del, once a series has been announced as a national realease, it will run its full course. Things like this are often provided at the start of a series as enticement to continue and to get a flavour of what is to come, it also breaks up endless issues of MDF frames.

@Del, the order that the parts come in a partwork never seems to be logical Im sure there are people who put a lot of work into deciding what comes in what issues, I think its a combination of letting the builder progress each week plus keep up the interest in the build for the future.

@Alan - It is a nice figurehead though, I was surprised. Like I said previously I wont be starting this for a while, My Vic is due to complete in April so maybe then when I have plenty of parts. I also need to have a good look into lighting etc.
