Hi Jase! You're quite correct, the defence of Rourkes Drift did gain the most VCs for a single action. Isandlwana had another link to the VC as well. Originally, you had to survive a battle in order to win the VC, there was no postumous award for the medal. Public pressure forced the government to allow those who had given their lives to be considered as well and the first two postumous VCs went to Lt Melville and Lt Coghill who lost their lives saving the colours of the 24th from the Zulus at Isandlwana. Although they weren't able to "carry them to safety" as ordered, months after the battle, the crown-topped flag pole was discovered in the river bed, the silk colours having long since rotted away. They did therefore prevent the Zulus taking them as a trophy and received the highest award for their gallantry! Love those two films!
