Hello guys and girls.
I have been watching this forum for a few weeks and what I've seen and learnt (whether I can put it into practise is another story) has been an eye opener.
A few weeks ago I Subscribed to the black pearl build and instantly I was hooked. A week ago I also subscribed to HMS victory, and to say I am scared and very excited is an understatement. Maybe a little more scared than excited if I'm being completely honest.
As the title suggests I am a complete newbie and it want to get HMS Victory right, right from the start. (I live opposite the navel dockyard in Portsmouth) so there's a lot of pressure from family and friends. Lol
Before I start building I want to ensure I have all the right tools. I have already ordered the paint and I have a few basic things that I've needed for the black pearl. But I really only have the basics. I am going to my hobby store at the weekend and want to get the majority of what I need.
My question to you is...... What are the top 10 things a beginner builder needs to ensure a good build?? ...... What I have so far:
A cutting mat Pva glue Bulldog clips (various sizes) Mini clamps Ruler Set square Stanley knife
Kind regards.
Della

Hi Della and welcome to the forum, you have certainly subscribed to a couple of nice builds, both of which I am also collecting. In addition to the items on your list you could add some small pliers and cutters, sanding block or sandpaper, a set of small files and a set of micro drill bits and pin vices - all these are fairly cheap to buy. Also, a small craft knife or scalpel may be better than a stanley knife. Good luck with the builds and hope to see a build diary soon Steve

Welcome to the forum Della
Firstly there is lots of help and support from the forum if you need it and one of the best ways to use the knowledge of those on the forum is to post a build diary so you can share your progress and challenges ahead.
As for the tools you will get a small basic tool kit with the victory a few issues in but this is my view of what you will need early on, you can always add tools as and when you need them, which will spread the cost for you.
Firstly adhesive. I would change your PVA glue for an Aliphatic type it is better suited to the job, you may also find a need for a good super glue or CA. here are some links for you. http://www.cornwallmodel...catalog/wood_glues.html
https://www.gluelines.co...ca-super-thin-7g-bottle
You will get a craft knife in the tool set but you will need a razor saw see link http://www.ebay.co.uk/it...amp;hash=item4ceaf0cccb
you may want to get a miter block for the saw but it is not essential http://www.ebay.co.uk/it...amp;hash=item485fc071b1
your going to need a selection of sandpapers of different grits check out somewhere like B&Q who have verity packs you want the fine end of the spectrum.
A selection of paint brushes of different sizes and a at least one flat brush of a medium size.
some masking tape http://www.ebay.co.uk/it...el-Making-/131101195201
That will probably get you going. if you have any other questions don't be afraid to ask

Hi Della welcome to the forum and remember the 1st rule of modelling enjoy yourself. The Victory is a great choice as a starter and will give a good grounding on the techniques needed to compleat your model. Although Bernd has made some changes to his Black Pearl it looks a nice model. Tools I would buy as you need and not much to add to the above recommendations regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Welcome Della, Like you I started as a novice modeller with no hobby tools at all. I build myself a portable toolbox out of 6mm plywood (1m x 400mm x 400m) to store the instruction magazines, planks and craft tools. One thing I quickly learned is to use an digitronic caliper (200mm) for mirror image planking and rib spacing. I also bought the basic tool kit consisting of a plank-bender; cutters; tweezers to pick up the tiny parts and a pin-pusher to safe the fingers. Set of Needle filesMicro drills1Metre flexible steel ruler is a great help when planning ahead your planking; placing deck plates and marking gun ports, etc. 50mm G-clamps to hold down the keel-board to the bench, etc. Optical lenses with a build in headlight is a bonus when working on small parts. The rest you can buy as you'll need them. Sanding blocks can be homemade. I use a small coffee tin with a small candle to bend the planks. As long as you have enough beverage close to you and loads of fun building your model, you will produce a great ship that will always please the eye. Hi Della Like you I'm completely new to model ship building and I'm building the same two ships. As well as building up the tool collection as the builds progress I've also found the need for plenty of storage boxes with dividers, comes in very handy for all the tiny parts Baz Current builds: HMS Victory, hachette black pearl, DC-3, R2-D2, Millennium Falcon

Baz Hi Baz,
You have a good point we often forget good organised storage is as important as the tools

The basic tools others have already mentioned will get you off to a good start..... Best of luck on your builds and look forward to seeing how you progress but always remember, if you need advice or assistance then the members on this forum are in my opinion the best around, they are a great bunch and will always assist where they can..... get yourself a mini drill (Dremmel) I find mine to be indispensable, it cuts, grinds, drills, sharpens, sands etc. well worth the money.

If your going to invest in a Dremmel type tool have a look at upgrading to Proxxon. I recently changed my Dremmel for one of these and its great. http://www.ebay.co.uk/it...&hash=item4cf4ed2c39“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Thanks everyone for the advice!! could anybody please help with this.....
Sorry to be a pain but I am new to the partworks and I have subscribed to HMS Victory and RB7, both of which are saying were sent on 5th and 7th February and I haven't received either. I also ordered the HMS Victory paint 3 weeks ago and that hasn't arrived either, which I have already paid for.
I am just concerned and not sure what to expect.
Your help and advice is greatly appreciated.
