Afternoon everyone,
Been having a look at cornwall models at their walnut strips, and think I'm going to go with the walnut for the decking? Does anyone know the rough measurements (thickness, width etc) I should be aiming for?
Sorry if this is a question asked a lot! Thanks, Tom

I think it was mentioned before but 3mm width would be the way to go, also when I used cornwall shop for my decking I got the very thin stuff. Personally I would use 0.5mm thickness, again I used this for my Bounty model decking, see what other members suggest thought.
0.5x3mm

Thanks Zeptrader, am I right in thinking it comes in 1000mm lengths? How do they post it? In a poster tube?
Need to wait for the next issue to get more detail on the planks so I can roughly work out how much I'll need!
Thanks a lot Tom

Yes Tom, the tubes are pretty good so no worries there, you need to check the length but that sounds about right, remember there is a surcharge for wood supplies of about £2.50 per order, do check thought mate. On the other hand if the tube is too long they tend to fold it up and bung it in an A4 envelope..LOL

Thanks Rob and Zeptrader,
I'll have a look into the Italy-based one too. Well I've got the sizes figured, now just to choose a wood! I like the look of the walnut, but I think the lime might look good also?
Can anyone suggest a colour that not too dark or too light?
Thanks, Tom

I've gone for 0.5 mm x 3 mm tangya. Planks which I have also ordered from Italy. As mentioned they are shut until nearly end of august but i am prepared to wait as the pricing they offer and normal delivery timescales are very impressive.
Presently have an Amati plank bender on order with them as well as I could not find anything of compatible price in the UK - a sad state of affairs.

Hello all, I'm new to this site and wondering why so many are changing/modifying the Victory? some modifications ara fantastic and helped me a great deal (the easy ones ;-)), but others are making me feel a little nervous about my build. Are the supplied planks of poor quality? This is my first ship build and i don't want my ship to look something i built (then blew up!) when i was younger, and i don't want to spent an extra fortune trying to make it look as close to the original as possible, as i was under the impression it would be an excellent replica anyways. Please someone put my mind at rest! Many thanks, Steve

I like you am new to the wooden ship builing hobby, and I fully agree with your observation that many forum contributors are making various changes and adaptations. My intention is to stick with the build as shown by Tomick, if it becomes apparent that something is completly wrong I shall trawl the forum for a remedy. As various contributors have mentioned, this is an expesive kit, if it needs so much adjustment it may have been cheaper and more effective to have gone for a scratch build. Just a footnote I have not even started the Victory build yet as I am finishing off my first ever wooden ship build(San Fransisco 11), I will post a few photos once it is complete. Just do the model the way you are most happy with..

Quote:wondering why so many are changing/modifying the Victory? Its part of the hobby, the joy of shipbuilding, and a little kit bashing (so called when you change or add to a kit) or even scratch (making additions or replacing kit parts) it really depends on you, if you feel comfortable in doing it then do it, if you don't or have never done it then leave it as it is, I think this ship will be superb on its own. Don't get worried by any improvements or changes to the ship, enjoy what your doing and maybe over time you may feel confident to have a go yourself.

Yet another newbie to wooden model building! I have decided to pretty much stick with the original kit and not spend tons on modifying it. However I'm a little concerned that people are buying their own planking for the gun decks. Will they not be supplied as part of the kit? If not I will have to purchase some myself.

Has anyone thought of replacing the supplied planking (basswood?) with something like lime for the hull?

Tom Why? For those of us going for the natural finish - wondering if anyone has thought about using a different type of wood

as de-ago said those wanting a natural finish can do so with the supplied wood, which means to me that you will get different coloured woods for the planking, don't know where the basswood came from? I hav'nt heard yet what the wood is apart from the bottom part of the hull,it will have a veneer overlay to replicate the coppering. Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/
